I just moved into the neighborhood. Qype indicates Video Center Movie Star as the closest video rental store to my apartment. I just tried to let my fingers do the walking by calling them beforehand and my first impression of them is already bad: The phone rang 20 times and no one answered. It's 11:15 am and they've been open for a couple of hours already and I just can't imagine they're flooded with customers on a sunny Friday morning and can't get to the phone.
On my way over there to see what they're like in person.

Membership is free. You only need a passport and a copy of your address registration (Anmeldebestätigung) to get a membership card and start renting movies. The guy at the counter, Halil, was friendly and super happy to practice his English with me. If all you want to do is rent a movie and watch it that night, then I find the prices at Video Center Movie Star to be better than the online rental stores. EUR1.75 if you bring it back by 23:58, two minutes before midnight. It's a computer thing, so they won't be able to make any exceptions if you're only a few minutes late. EUR3.50 if you bring it back the next day. And my favorite for rainy weekends is the Relax-Paket: 3 movies for EUR6 for two days. Even though it's a sunny weekend, I went for the package deal because Halloween has put me in a Batman mood. As a little test, I told Halil I wanted the first three of seven and he got it right: Batman (1989), Batman Returns (1992) and Batman Forever (1995). He even added his opinion that the second one in the series is the best of them all. ;)
Other tips given me were that I could go online to reserve movies ahead of time and that older movies could be ordered directly at the cashier counter. For new movies, he said I had to look for them upstairs along the wall and I would have to bring the little plastic movie marker with me to the counter. He said some customers complain about this process. For me, it reminds me of how it's done back home.
