From much-loved classics, to newly re-discovered gems and rarely-seen masterpieces, from improvised accompaniments by talented pianists, to brand new scores by innovative musicians, Barbican Film presents the very best of silent cinema and live music one Sunday afternoon each month.

Sunday 22nd January: Charley Chase - Crazy Like a Fox (U)
In a series of two-reeler shorts made with legendary producer Hal Roach, Charley Chase established himself alongside Buster Keaton, Charlie Chaplin and Harold Lloyd as one of the funniest comedians of the silent era. He elevated comedy to an art form with his unique combination of madcap adventures and wild misunderstandings.

Known as the master of 'the comedy of embarrassment', Charley Chase's nonchalant mannerisms, as well as his good looks, made him one of the most seductive silent-comedy heroes of the 20s. Rarely screened in UK cinemas, our programme includes Crazy Like a Fox (1926), His Wooden Wedding (1925) and Mighty Like a Moose (1926).

With live piano accompaniment by John Sweeney.

Sunday 19th February: An Italian Straw Hat (U)
René Clair's delectable satire on middle-class pretension is one of the great landmarks of French silent cinema. A young man in 1890s Paris is on his way to his wedding, when his horse chews the straw hat of a philandering married woman. Complications inevitably abound, as he offers to replace the hat whilst trying desperately not to jeopardise his wedding arrangements. The tale unfolds in an endless series of comic misunderstandings, "so expertly timed and so elegantly directed that farce becomes ballet" (Pauline Kael).

A sparkling comedy of errors adapted from the play by Eugene Labiche and Marc Michel, and starring the great French film actor, and Clair regular, Albert Préjean.
