L'avis 4 étoiles de Katie
I have to admit that I was lured here by the recent mention in Sunset Magazine. I'm one of those.
But! When we went over the last weekend I realized that on another recent adventure in Tucson my not-yet-husband and his drunken friends (all Tucson natives) tried to take me here, unsuccessfully, as they were closed for the night. So, point number one is that while El Guero Canelo would make excellent drunk-food, they aren't open those kind of hours.
They are open Sunday afternoons, which is when I ended up trying the infamous Sonoran hotdogs. We ordered them with all their toppings, which means: pinto beans, mayo, onions, tomatoes, and of course, bacon around the dog itself. And then there's the condiment bar which is chock full of other goodies including salsas, radishes, cheese, sliced cucumbers, and grilled yellow and green chilies and onions. Yum. I piled a bit more salsa onto my hotdog and then ate a plate off cucumbers sprinkled with salsa and lime juice on the side. The chips my husband ordered were way, way too salty for me to indulge in.
The atmosphere isn't exactly the roadside stand you'd be expecting if you only read the Sunset article or knew much about the other location. This location is huge, sparkling clean, has TV's on the wall, and was packed full of people.
While I'm pretty set with living in California, the existence of places like El Guero Canelo in Tucson, make me momentarily consider what it might be like to live in the desert.
