Love La Med! I've been going there for years and should have written a review long ago. Not only is the food and atmosphere great, but they're the best place in the Bay Area to get affordable food for any event (office party, wedding, whatever) that is sure to please everyone. With locations in SF and Berkeley, it's also very convenient.
Special favorites are the Middle Eastern Plate and the Pomegranate Chicken -- a must if you're ordering for a party, you will not have any left over. And if you do, that's a good thing.
I love this place. I've been coming here since the late 90's, and the food has always been delicious, with great service.
No matter what, I have to get their avgolemono! And their hummus? Dang. For lunch or dinner, I tend to get the Middle Eastern Plate and pick three items.
Down side, sometimes the soup isn't hot. I think that's about it.
The decor is cozy and sweet, and they've got a beautiful little bathroom.
I don't know if I was starving that day or what, but seriously everything I got on my plate was SO GOOD. I got the middle eastern plate with soup. The soup was the traditional avgolemono which is lemon chicken rice soup. The plate was perfect because I wanted to try a little bit of everything. I got the lamb lule which was a lamb meatball and it was incredibly moist and flavorful as I was able to taste the herbs and spices. And who knew rice could taste so good? The rice pilaf with chickpeas were very flavorful too. There were also two flaky pieces of phillo dough, one with spinach & feta, the other with chicken, almonds, cinnamon and spices. I devoured everything on my plate including the hummus. Also, with the check, the waitress gave us two little pistachio cookies. La Med is a keeper and I'm definitely going again!
I like coming back to La Mediterranee when I'm in the mood for a comforting meal in a relaxed atmosphere. I recall stopping by on a Friday night around 6:30PM and it wasn't crowded at all. This was great since I was ready to eat!
The Middle Eastern Plate is great dish to order if you're dining here for the first time. It came with a variety of items including Chicken Cilicia Fillo, Grecian Spinach & Feta Fillo, Levant Sandwich, and a Lamb Lule Kebab (ground lamb meatballs). Be on the look out for specials on the menu as well. The Moussaka is a delicious dish that bears a resemblance to lasagna.
My favorite from the Middle Eastern Plate was definitely the levant sandwich that consisted of cream cheese, herbs, cucumbers, carrots, lettuce, feta cheese & tomato rolled in levantine bread. It reminded me of a healthy wrap packed filled with veggies. The cream cheese just added a touch of perfection.
I was slightly disappointed in the Chicken Cilicia Fillo though mainly because I found the chicken slightly dry. The fillo consisted of a puff pastry filled with chicken chunks, almonds, chickpeas, raisins, cinnamon, and spices. The sugar dusted on top gave it a nice sweet flavor overall, but with the dryness of the chicken I don't see myself ordering this item by itself. On the other hand, the Spinach & Feta Fillo was a lot better by having a smooth texture that went well with the crispy, flaky exterior.
If all that food wasn't already enough, you can choose between green salad, Armenian potato salad, or soup with your order. I personally love the Armenian potato salad and the Avgolemono (Greek Lemon Chicken and Rice Puree) soup. Both of these items are refreshing with a hint of lemon that gives the dishes a bit of tartness. You won't be disappointed and it actually made me crave the food even more!
I was grabbing my stomach by the time I finished my plate and if you could see the smile on my face, you might think I peaced out and went to foodie heaven.
== A MUST TRY! ==
I just love this place. First discovered it in Berkeley with a friend about 14 years ago only to find out that, there is also one in Castro neighborhood. Both places offer great service and the food is fantastic. Two weeks ago, some dear friends from Seattle flew into San Francisco so, I took them to La Mediterranee for brunch which of course they loved. We had the combinations with eggs, apple bacon and potatoes including the home made muffins. My friends also had the Middle Eastern Plate and one had the Vegetarian Middle Easter Plate on my recommendation. Fortunately, they enjoyed all of it. I one of my favorites is the Middle Easter and Meza Plate since you can try a variety of items.
Had a very filling and satisfying lunch here. Definitely a great lunch spot with reasonable prices.
The sister and I shared the Spicy Humus and Cucumber Yogurt Dip with Pita Bread. The hummus could have had a bit more spice to it. It was sprinkled with paprika but I could have used more of a kick from the paprika and peppers. The cucumber yogurt was refreshing and a great compliment to the hummus. We had a second helping of pita bread free of charge.
Their lunch specials are an awesome deal here. We shared the Chicken Shawarma and the Middle Eastern Plate. Both were $8.95.
The Chicken Shawarma wrap was filled with flavor and was juicy at every bite. Generous pieces of chicken and the wrap was nice and toasted. A side of Armenian Potato salad complimented. It was refreshing and had a hint of mint and citrus flavor.
I enjoyed the Middle Eastern Lunch Plate very much. You get to chose 3 options. Being meat eaters, we opted for the Pomegranate Chicken, Levantine Meat Tart, and Chicken Cilicia. All three were were delicious and I would chose this combo of items again.
I wouldn't have minded if the Pomegranate Chicken had a little more pom and tart flavor, but it was juicy and meaty. Chicken was topped on a nice bed of rice pilaf. My The meat tart was hearty. But it was the Chicken Cilicia that was my favorite. A fillo dough wrap, stuffed with almond, chickpea, cinnamon, raisin and chicken chucks.
We sat outside on this warm afternoon, and the servers were pretty attentive. I've had too many experiences where servers completely forget and ignore you after your order, but the servers here were nice and helpful.
Overall, great lunch spot and reasonable lunch prices. Everything we ordered would definitely be something we'd order again.
Came here on a weekend with the girls for a nice lunch. No wait, great service, and a cozy, welcoming atmosphere.
I ordered the Middle Eastern Plate with chicken pomegranate, levantine meat tart, and levant sandwich with a pomegranate mimosa. My friends ordered the Lule Kebab and the Lorraine brunch special. I enjoyed every single thing on my plate. I don't think I've ever said that before about any mixed plate dishes I've tried. The chicken pomegranate was fall-off-the-bone tender and full of flavor. The meat tart had a delicious phyllo wrapping and perfectly seasoned meat. The levant sandwich was made with fresh ingredients that made for a refreshing bite after all that meat. Even the green salad that accompanied my food was deliciously dressed. The pomegranate mimosa was good but it was kind of pricey and I wouldn't order it again. I tried a bite of my friend's Lule Kebab and loved it! It was juicy, tender and full of great flavors.
I would definitely come back here again and have the middle eastern plate again, perhaps with the lule kebab, or to try any of their other foods.
This was my first time going to a Mediterranean restaurant. It was a great experience! I got the Middle Eastern Plate with Pomegranate Chicken. YUM!!! There were a lot of people there and it took a bit to get our order in which is understandable. Will definitely be back.
Holy moly! That Pomegranate Chicken is the BEST ever!!
Let me preface this by the fact that I don't really like chicken.
I eat chicken because it has a smaller carbon footprint and it is a healthier option to red meat.
It was lunch time, so I ordered the lunch special Middle Eastern Plate
Served with a Cup of Carrot Curry Soup, and my choice of three items.
I chose the following:
All this food was for $8.95 with rice, hummus, and a itty bitty salad.
When the food was served, the glorious scent of the Pomegranate Chicken swirled past me, and I decided to eat that first. Each bite was fantastically packed with flavor in every little morsel. I believe that was the best tasting chicken that I ever ate! As for the texture, it could have been a little more tender, but I will choose over cooking the chicken over salmonella any day!
The Dolma was full of yummy goodness, the grapeleaf wasn't over cooked.
The Levant Sandwich has cream cheese, so I couldn't complain. You can see the layers of care that went into the sandwich, and how the dough was baked enough to be cooked, but still soft and tender.
The staff was friendly; they checked on us several times. The food was served quickly, and we were pretty much in and out in 30 minutes. I finished my meal, and was satiated, but not full in the greasy gross way. Like I could walk around afterward, and walk the fullness away without feeling sick about it. I'm writing this review an hour after, and I'm still full. I was really happy to enjoy this experience.
I came to La Mediterranee today for lunch and ordered the lunch special Middle Eastern Plate for $8.95. This comes with your choice of three items, plus a soup or salad. I chose Dolma and two phyllo dough items, the Levantine Meat Tart and the Chicken Cilicia. The Chicken Cilicia was delicious, although an odd concept. It contains chicken, but was otherwise quite dessert-like since it was covered in sugar and cinnamon. The Levantine Meat Tart was also good, but the Dolma was fairly standard.
Although everything was good, the portions were very small. I ate everything on my plate and left still hungry. If the portions were a bit larger, I would bump this place up to four stars.
Excellent find. The lamb here is delicious, and to appreciate all they have to offer, definitely get the middle eastern plate. You get your choice of 3 items, taking the lamb, pomegranate chicken, and grecian and spinach feta. The meal is just the right size and is packed with fantastic flavor. For desert, the baklava is a little hard but super super sweet, definitely will give you the fix you've been looking for. Fantastic place!
Stopped in on a stormy night and immediately found comfort in the cozy, relaxed ambiance. Ordered the Middle Eastern plate, and was surprised by how fast it came out.
The pita was warm, but crispy and dry, and the hummus had an odd earthy taste. The Pomegranate Chicken was tender and well-cooked, but the spices were subtle and unextraordinary. The lamb meatball was nicely spiced and the highlight of the dish. The chicken filicia was surprisingly sweet and refreshing and the spinach and feta variant was also quite good, though the outer crusts on both were dry and overbaked. The cream of potato soup was pretty standard, but a nice addition given the weather.
Friendly, attentive service, and a nice place for variety, with reasonable prices.
The middle eastern plate, armenian potato salad and hummus plate are my favorite here.
The hummus plate is huge and comes with pickled veggies on the side.
chicken cilicia is my favorite thing on the menu. It is a savory and slightly sweet pastry filled with Chicken Chunks with Almonds, Chickpeas, Raisins, Cinnamon & Spices.
La Mediterranee is a San Francisco hidden gem! I am so glad some friends introduced me to this place not long after I moved.
Although small and intimate, La Mediterranee does not feel stuffy or overwhelming. It is trendy, casually intimate, and a fun place to dine. There are usually patrons here, but there is rarely a wait. Service feels effortless. In terms of food, the Middle Eastern plate comes highly recommended by me. It is a large selection of food, all of it delicious. and it comes in both vegetarian and meat-eating versions.
La Mediterranee is a great place to linger and wine and dine at a reasonable price. I'm looking forward to finding a good (or not so good) reason to return.
Super cute place in the Castro!
My coworker and I decided to pop over here for lunch after discovering this place via Yelp. It has a few tables for outdoor seating and room inside. The decor and atmosphere is simply cute! Very amiable place, homey in some sense. There was only one person when we arrived (given it was a Thursday lunch) but it started to get a little busy as we left.
Both of us got the Middle Eastern plate. There's a lunch special for super cheap (~$9) and you get to choose 3 between about 8 items. I got the plate with the Lule Kebab, Chicken Cilicia and Grecian Spinach and Feta served with Armenian Potato Salad. The potato salad was very fresh, not too heavy either. Loved the grecian spinach and feta - great blend of flavours. Same with the chicken cilicia - a bit of sweet with savory (in a good way). I highly recommend this especially if you're a fan of raisin bread. Lule kebab was definitely my favorite but I'm also a huge fan of lamb.
Overall great meal for a good price. Definitely would come back.
Service at La Med was super attentive and friendly, and they even gave our dog a bowl of water, how nice! Outdoor seating is nice, bring a jacket on a breezy day.
Hearty and generous portions here, you will most definitely be full. The Middle Eastern Plate has a great assortment of everything, so it's probably the most bang for your buck if you want to try a bunch of different things and immerse yourself in deliciousness. Everything is done so well, I never know what to eat first when my plate comes out!
I'm a fan of La Med. The food is good, prices are reasonable and the wait staff are very attentive. I always get the Middle Eastern plate because it offers a variety of different things for only $13.50. Because I love the chicken cilicia i substituted a second one for the levant sandwich which I'm not too crazy about. I enjoy the sweet/savory flavor of chicken and spices which is delicately rolled in filo. You get your choice of a kebab or pomegranate chicken and I always get the latter. I love its tanginess and the meat is very tender. My husband got the chicken kebab and enjoyed his meal although he was a bit sad that they ran out of rice. This place always fulfills my craving for middle eastern food.
I love this place. I've been going here and to the Berkeley location for years, and no other Mediterranean place will do for me anymore. The seasoning in all of their dishes is just perfect. I like to get the middle eastern plate because I like the variety, but even then I can't decide between lamb or chicken (both so good!) and whether I want the green salad, with its tangy dressing, or one of their amazing soups - chicken or tomato are my favorites. Their date dessert is usually too much for me after a full meal, but it comes with whipped cream and is also delicious.
This place serves really tasty Middle Eastern food. I had dinner here with a group of friends on Saturday night and I ordered the Middle Eastern Plate. This is comprised of the Chicken Cilicia Fillo, Grecian Spinach & Feta Fillo, Levant Sandwich, and choice of Lamb Lule or Chicken Pomegrante (i chose the chicken). It also comes with rice and a choice of green salad, potato salad, or cup of soup. The soup was a choice of Cream of Potato or Lemony Chicken. Since my friends also ordered the same stuff, I was able to try both soups. The Cream of Potato was delicious and I preferred it over the Lemony Chicken, which was way too lemony for me.
Even though it sounds like a lot of food, when the plate arrive, it was actually a lot smaller than I thought. They were able to fit all 4 items on half of a plate, with the soup sitting on the other half. At first, I wasn't sure if it'd be enough food for me, but I was surprisingly full by the end of the meal.
The first thing I tried was the Grecian Spinach & Feta Fillo. It was like a pastry filled with spinach and cheese, so i was dry rather than wet like spinach dip. It was really good, very cheesy and full of flavor.
Next I had the Levant Sandwich, which is like a wrap filled with crunchy veggies, herbs, and cream cheese. It was served cold and was very refreshing. I liked the crunch of the cucumber and lettuce.
I thought that the Chicken Pomegranate was very flavorful and the meat fell off the bone, but it was also pretty dry because it was baked for a long time. And I didn't particularly like the marinate that the chicken was cooked in. I really liked the rice pilaf that came with the chicken though. Finally, the Chicken Cilicia Fillo was very good, it was both sweet and savory.
Overall, I thought the food was very good and because I seldomly have Middle Eastern food, it was full of flavors that I don't have very often. I also thought that the service was attentive and quite good - our water was filled several times. For $12.25, the Middle Eastern Plate is also a good deal for trying out a combination of different items.
Why this place was not completely full at 8:30pm on a Saturday night, I do not know.
When our chosen restaurant of the evening (Starbelly) had a 2+ hour wait; we simply walked across the street and grabbed a table at La Mediterranee... and had a delicious dinner, with better service, at a great price.
For starters, loved the wine we chose.. a chardonnay/torrontes blend from Argentina. And at $25/bottle, not bad.
My three friends and I shared the large combination appetizer -- highly recommended for those like us who like variety -- a combo of hummus, baba ghanoush, tabuleh, dolmas, feta and olives... $10. As a main, had the Middle Eastern plate, another variety combo including several delicious things I can't even recall... again, recommended.
Everything we tried was fresh and delicious, sans for a much-too-lemony soup that we merely sampled, but didn't order (not bad, just wasn't too our liking).
In a neighborhood like Castro -- where good dinner options are somewhat lacking, relative to other SF 'hoods -- I'm not sure why this place wasn't jam-packed on a Saturday night. Anyhow, happy to have finally tried it... I will be back, and soon.
