Meh. I appreciate the emphasis placed on sourcing local ingredients (little hipster yuppie tree hugging vegetarian that I am). The location and decor are lovely and the staff is pretty attentive. But I've had very mixed experiences with the food. I'll admit I do enjoy breakfast and brunch at The Blue Bird, the apple rosemary pancakes are nothing short of delicious. However, I am consistently underwhelmed at the dinners I've had there. I would and will go back for brunch, but if you're in the Westside and looking for a great dinner I would strongly suggest Westside Local or FUD.
I. Love. Lulu's! (full stop) Being a bit a creature of habit I love when I find a place where I consistently have a great experience. The ambiance is Crossroads cool, the staff is wonderful, and the peanut sauce for the spring rolls...excuse me while I salivate. I get the same thing ever time I go (I told you I was a creature of habit) the Wan Se'ew Pak- it's always delicious, always. One issue I have is the acoustics. When the restaurant is full it gets very loud, and can be difficult to have a conversation without yelling or using hand gestures. However, this is only a problem when the place is really hopping. Lulu's is my go to place in the Crossroads, in fact I'll be celebrating my birthday there tomorrow!
If you're in need of an excellent, quick, affordable manicure, Oak Nails is the place for you. I've gotten numerous manicures and been happy with them all. Tina is my favorite technician, but everyone is great! The service is consistently superb. The reason I finally got around to leaving a review is as follows: This morning I had chipped nail, I was in need of some serious nail triage, STAT! I ran into Oak, and they quickly fixed the nail. I was in and out in under 20 minutes, no charge. That is one of the reasons they have such a loyal clientele.
I've been coming to Skyline for about a year and wanted to jot a quick update, I'm sure everyone was waiting with baited breath to hear my continuing Skyline saga! I only have great things to say about my experience! The salon is beautifully appointed, giving off a chic urban vibe. The staff is amazing, always nice and helpful from the moment you step in the door. Skyline excels at providing a consistent level of excellence to its clientele.
As for the hair stylists...Seriously, Nick should have a PhD in gorgeous. I left the salon yesterday and spent a day basking in compliments about my hair. I was whipping my hair back and forth, putting poor little Willow Smith to shame (I could show her a thing or two about the hair toss). Nick always listens to what I want, works his crazy magic hair voodoo and delivers hair befitting a shampoo commercial. In all honesty, is there anything better than having someone wash your hair while Clueless is being projected on the wall in front of you?! As IF!!
Skyline has given my hair the best year of its life! You know those girls in the shampoo commercials? The ones with the long shiny flowy perfect locks?… En savoir plus
There are those that think man cannot live on bread alone. WRONG! They have obviously never tried a fresh loaf of delectable Italian bread dipped in a bit of olive oil and balsamic from Bloom.
This is bar none my favorite bakery in Kansas City. It offers a wide selection of breads from hearty loaves of Italian to French baguettes to Challah. The bread is always fresh and reasonably priced. A loaf of Italian is about $4.50.
Now onto the sweet stuff! Bloom is also the home of the best french macaroon in the KC metro area, beating out a certain Suisse confiserie that shall remain nameless. The texture of the french macaroons is perfection, I doubt you will find better this side of the Seine. The chocolate torte is also divine; I can't wait to try more of what their glittering glass cases have to offer.
Carollo's is a staple of my weekend city market excursions. I've been going there for years, the quality is consistently excellent. It is a great family run business that cares about its customs and reputation.
Being a vegetarian, I always get the same sandwich, a #4, which is the best most delicious caprese this side of Italy! The ingredients are always fresh, they have some of the best mozzarella I've ever had. The bread it's served on is also perfection. My brother, a devout carnivore loves their selection of meats and in particular their sausages. They have an amazing olive/antipasto bar which includes a to-die-for seafood salad. Some of the best and freshest octopus I've ever tasted in the Midwest! The food is 5 stars all the way! Consistent, mouthwateringly delicious and reasonable priced.
It also provides a nice (albeit a little small) selection of sundry items. While the quantity of items is not exactly extensive, it is very compressive and the quality is high. Including a wide variety a excellent olive oils. However, as its name indicates it is a gourmet grocery and is a bit pricey for your everyday need. But if you need a specialty Italian item this is the place to go. Overall Carollos is a classic Italian grocer and deli with the BEST caprese sandwich in town!
