Absolutely love this little place. Appears to be family-owned and it's been there for maybe 15 years? Best sushi we can find nearby. We have eaten in and also done takeout. The rice is always good and fish is fresh and delicious, and we love the staff there. A little quirky, but that's what makes Tsuru so enjoyable. Prep consistency from night to night can differ, but I've never had a bad bite there.
I agree about the decor being tired! Come on guys, spice it up a little bit and you'd be packed!
Had some items from the antipasto bar for lunch. After I balked at the price of $10.25 per pound, I went ahead and tried it. I was hungry. The food was VERY delicious and fresh and made the cost worth it. Perhaps it was my choices though? I would go here again after payday.
Yeah. I am biased as a SF/Oakland native, but this place is ridiculous. Seriously, NY? Four stars?? These guys are from SF? Really? Came here for a quick neighborhood dinner on the 4-star yelp reviews. Carnitas taco with everything, and Horchata! Yay!! My friends got the burritos, but they pretty much looked like the tacos, but bigger, with rice and beans.
Carnitas= very bland pulled pork, no flavoring. At least fry it up for god's sake!
Taco= A flour tortilla?? This reads more like a soggy open-faced mini-burrito than whatever you guys sampled out in SF.
Horchata= Disgusting! So bad I exchanged it for their lemonade, which was better. Even the person at the register apologized for its quality. Take a hint?
I think Chipotle is better and they don't try to fool with their "authenticity" by offering Horchata. The drink is an amazing milky white drink from ground almonds, rice, barley, and some cinnamon. What they offer here looks like dish water. Like, I could not find any redeeming qualities about it, and I am generally kind in my reviews. Gross!!
I can make a far better taco/burrito at home for a fraction of the price. Alas.
ps. I did like the hot sauce.
Toasted Whole Wheat Everything with Veggie cream cheese. Seems to be a popular one. Cheap, fast, and friendly. The bagel was a tiny bit too salty, but delicious and fresh. I detected only a slight breadiness. I grab an iced coffee and I'm on my way for $4. Yay!
I'd say 3.5 stars for price vs. quality. A gentle cup, nicely balanced flavors, if not a little too balanced. Not quite robust enough for my taste. I drink my coffees black with a little milk/cream. I don't like coffee that hits you in the face, but I also like a taste substantial enough that it warrants a special trip. Good, but you're still paying top-dolla' for a cup that falls sadly short of several Northwest brews.
Might go back out of sheer convenience.
I just ate THE SPICIESSSSST Papaya Salad I have ever eaten.
Well... actually, I did not eat it. I picked away at it and the put it aside to think over. This was after dashing around the apartment looking for something- anything- to cool my buds.
I love Papaya Salad and I'm no stranger to spice, but this was over the top. My guess is that whomever made it, didn't feel they needed to take the extra time to toss it a little better. I literally had a gigantic glob of spiciness buried in the papaya. There were a few places that went untouched by the heat- and I found the flavoring in these places to be a little underwhelming. Not enough fish sauce, lime, sweet, salt.
Also tried the Ginger Chicken. Which was good and vegetable-y- but not enough ginger flavor and the rice was a little mushy in places.
This all would warrant 3 stars or worse, but the rest of my food was quick, delicious, and a prefect amount. For the price, I think it is definitely 4 stars. Maybe I'm being generous. Everything tasted fresh, and was delicious- in a standard dumbed-down american palate sort of way.
And I plan on washing off the worst papaya and trying again. Alas.
New to the village. For lunch I was hungry for a slice of pizza so I looked in the area for decent places. After being scared away by the celebrity of Joe's, I settled on Spunto, which looked more italian-style thin crust. Picked up a small Classico pizza, and although it was piled high with tomatoes, moz, and basil it was good. I loved the thin crust. The marinara was great, but not memorable. Still doesn't beat the pizza in Italy. A little pricey for a quick lunch, but the ingredients were all delicious and quality- so, a fair price. Next time I stop in, I want to try their gazpacho.
As one reviewer noted, they're not very crowded- but I think they do a big lunch delivery business- because I saw bikers coming in and out the whole time.
We ate at both Bar Acuda and Mediterranean Gourmet (voted best restaurant on Kauai). We felt that Bar Acuda was far better than MG.
A little expensive, but we had the best time eating there out of all our dining experiences. We were random walkins and requested a table outside on a very busy Friday night- they were so awesome in trying to accommodate that. We had to wait about 40 minutes at the bar- but the drinks were great so we didn't mind. We enjoyed everything we ate.
No WAY, this place deserves all the low ratings it gets! Unless your only taco experience has been at Taco Bell, find somewhere else! I ordered the fish tacos and my husband got the big taco. Two stars because the fish was fresh and we didn't get sick afterwards.
My tacos were edible but totally bland, my husbands looked like a gigantic overpriced $12 Taco Bell version of the "taco." And Taco Bell's are only what... a dollar? Is that even meat in there? Definitely a tourist trap. This was the only place we didn't look up before we ate because we were so hungry. Blechk, my bad.
