I think I found my ideal waiter at The Lobster...I wish I could take him everywhere with me to every restaurant! Seriously, the food was amazing too but I never come across a server that is the perfect blend of friendly, helpful, and leave me alone! I wish I got his name, but unfortunately I did not...he is older, maybe 40ish, slim, with dark framed glasses. Just look for him and make sure you sit in his section!
Ok, now onto the rest of the restaurant! You would never think that this place was actually going to be good judging by the location (right before the Santa Monica pier), but it is! Obviously, get the lobster...the place is called The Lobster. Specifically get the grilled lobster, it was the best I've ever had. Perfectly seasoned, perfectly cooked. We also got the prawn appetizer which came with an amazing sauce and bread to soak it up. We finished the meal with blackberry cobbler which couldn't have been better. Honestly, it was a perfect meal. Perfect service, perfect food, just wonderful! Also, a side note...(I didn't pay attention to this at other restaurants so I am not sure if this is just California or this restaurant) they sell their bottles of wine for an amazing price! We ordered a bottle of Whitehaven sauvignon blanc for $24! It normally sells at stores here in Michigan for $24! I was very happy about that. Anyway, just go here!
Leave it up to Yelp, to yet again send me to another great restaurant! The only reason why I didn't give 5 stars is because my boyfriend's lamb steak was pretty tough. Other than that, everything we ate was wonderful! The service was also phenomenal, everyone was so friendly. Plus, the place is beautiful the way it is designed. I just loved it all around.
We got to try a lot of things so I will categorize for you. What I would get again, and what I would not. So, what I would get again: balsamic glazed ribs with fried basil (SO tender!), pasta carbonara, lamb belly, baby broccoli, whole bronzino, and the strawberry crostada (possibly the best dessert ever-or tied with prep kitchen).
What I wouldn't get again: the lamb steak, it was super tough and reallly lamby. Now, I love lamb and don't mind the flavor at all. I've never been offended by lamb flavor in any cut I've ever had but this steak was reallllly lamby! The server said it was good because it was from Colorado and not as strongly flavored as Australian...lets just say I am very glad it wasn't Australian!
I would definitely come back here again! It is between this meal and the one we had at Prep Kitchen that tie for our best meals in California!
I couldn't think of a better little breakfast place! They have the most beautiful view of a beach in la jolla, they play reggae all day, they have amazing food, great service, and the place is so cute- just like a little cottage! I really wish I lived in la jolla and I could come here all of the time. My boyfriend and I liked it so much, we came here twice over the 4 days we were in San Diego.
The first time, I got the coast toast which everybody talks about. It was very good, but very rich. I could only eat one piece! It isn't your typical french toast, its more like bread pudding or something like that. She definitely puts some kind of orange zest in there too. My boyfriend got the strawberry and walnut pancakes and I was almost jealous of him! They were SO good!
The second time around we were more in the mood for lunch, but it was too early. I got the chilaquiles (which I have never had before) and they were amazing! It is tortilla chips, eggs, chorizo, pulled pork, and some kind of tomato/chile sauce. It was topped off with salsa and guac. WoW! Noah got the steak breakfast burrito which was also awesome.
I really have no complaints about this place. Everything was perfect both times we went! It looked like they take reservations, so make one to sit outside if it is going to be a nice day!
What a little gem of a place right here in Ferndale! I though I had run out of places to go, until I found Hilton Road Cafe. It is super quaint, super cheap, and really good! I've been a few times now and have tried both breakfast and lunch and I can say they are both delicious.
For breakfast I've had the pancake breakfast and the breakfast croissant. They were both really good (and both really cheap at about $5 each), but I liked the sandwich better. The pancakes are really pretty tasty, though. Their breakfast potatoes, any way you get them are great. Super crispy, just how I like em'!
For lunch, I've had both the poppyseed salad and the greek salad. Both were so good. I have been looking for a good place to go for a salad (besides Anita's) and now I've found it! I just wish they were open a little longer on the weekends. The chicken poppy salad is the best thing I've ordered there. It is only $7.50 and you get mixed greens, chicken, pineapple, strawberries, blueberries, and pecans with poppyseed dressing. Yum! Plus you get bread with that too!
One thing you should make sure to do is order some of their homemade bread. Make sure they grill it for you too. It makes it SO much better with the seasoning from the grill on there. You will not be disappointed! Oh, and the staff is super nice too!
FYI: I am writing this review based off my experiences as the past two street eats events. The first time I had El Guapo (at the second street eats in royal oak), I really liked it. I was so excited when I saw they had both short ribs and pork belly on their menu (two of my most favorite foods!). So, naturally I ordered the pork belly taco and the korean short rib taco. I liked them both a lot. The pork belly taco needs something else, maybe more acid to cut through all of the fat. The short rib taco was my favorite, although it was pretty salty. I'd say you can only have one of each. The pork belly being a little too rich and the short rib being a little too salty.
The second time we went, we waited in a VERY long line at the street eats event in ferndale. It took at least 20 minutes to order, and another 25 to get our food. I felt a little like I was being held hostage. This time, I didn't like the tacos quite as much. The short ribs were a little saltier and the pork belly was a little fattier. I still want to go back and try their other offerings, such as a burrito. I saw one on the menu with pineapple salsa which sounded interesting. Maybe the pork belly with the pineapple salsa would be better?
Also, another thing that kind of bummed me out was that they got our order wrong both times we went. Both times they left off a taco. So, make sure to check your order before you walk away!
One last thing: I LOVE that we are getting more food trucks in Detroit!! So keep them coming!!
I loved Bucharest Grill! I went to pick up carry out for lunch the other day and was very impressed. Living in Detroit, I have had a lot of really good middle eastern food. I think Bucharest may have the best schwarma I've ever had! I ordered the bucharest schwarma pita which came with chicken schwarma, garlic sauce, pickles, cabbage, tomatoes, and french fries (in the sandwich). Wow was it good! It was huge and only $4.75! That was almost the best part. Great prices. The french fries in the sandwich reminded me of Israel, where they put french fries in your falafel, which I loved when I was there!
My boyfriend also tried the house salad with cucumbers, green peppers, red onions, tomatoes, and feta with olive oil and vinegar dressing. I really loved that salad! The pile on tons of feta which just coats all of the veggies. Yum! I can't wait to come back here again soon. I have craved it every day since...
Hm...I'm not so sure I feel the same way as everyone else on here. I didn't think that Bronx was anything that special. My boyfriend and I went here on a random Saturday afternoon for a burger because we heard they were good. The ambiance is alright, very rock and roll, hipster kind of place. I liked some of the design elements in the booths, but man was this place cold! I don't think they had their heat on and it was in the beginning of February! I had my jacket and hood on the whole time I was eating.
The service isn't very good either. I know I shouldn't expect much, but nobody was very friendly. I guess it seems to be a Detroit thing...So many places do the "I am too cool to be nice to you (unless I know you)" kind of thing. Or at least that is the vibe I get. The burger was pretty good, but there are definitely a bunch of places I've had a better one. Plus, my boyfriend asked for his burger medium, and it was pretty much raw...so undercooked he wouldn't even eat it. They are super slow too, because they have one tiny grill that makes up their kitchen.
The patio seems cool, so maybe I'll come back in the summer and see if it is any better. Sorry Bronx, you are not as cool as you think you are...
Oh, how I love anything Zingerman's...they just do everything right. Seriously. I have yet to find a flaw in anything related to the Zingerman's brand! Superior service, top quality, and most importantly everything they have tastes amazing!
Somehow, 2 weeks ago was my first time at the Zingerman's Deli. I am not sure how I haven't been here before, but I am glad I finally made it! I guess I had associated Deli with gross lunch meat, but that is not Zingerman's at all. This store is so much fun to just walk around in. They have cookbooks, specialty foods, oils, vinegars, cheese, cured meats, amazing bacon, and sandwiches. I have not had one of the sandwiches, because I ate at the roadhouse before I went here! I did get a lot of bacon, though! If you are a bacon fan, you have to get the long pepper bacon they have. It seriously is the best bacon I've had! Let me tell you, I am a HUGE fan of bacon so I can promise you it is worth it.
I can't wait to come back and explore and taste more from Zingerman's!
*Another note of why I love Zingerman's so much: My boyfriend had his dad's birthday party catered by them and we told them we didn't really like the latkes they served and they sent him a $100 gift card to use at any Zingerman's location! How awesome is that? He didn't even want anything, he was just giving them some feedback.
This place is wonderful! Definitely the best Vietnamese I've had in the Detroit area. Now, I am no Vietnamese expert, so that is just my personal opinion. All I can say is that it was really great.
So, now to the food. We started with the ginger tai beef and the make your own spring rolls with the shrimp skewered on sugar cane. The ginger tai beef was the best thing we had all night. I am still thinking about it...seriously it was so flavorful and tender! It had lime juice, mint, chiles, and ginger it was SOO good!! The spring rolls were really good as well. I don't know if I would get the shrimp again, but it was kind of fun to make your own. They give you the rice paper and water and all of the fillings and you roll your own. It isn't the easiest thing, so you may just want to order some that are already rolled for you.
For our entrees we all got something different so we could try as much as possible. I got the medium cooked beef pho, which was very good. It came with the usual garnishes to add. My brother got the sizzling duck, which had a nice flavor but there were parts of the duck in there that most people would not want to eat, which was kind of weird. My boyfriend got the lemongrass chicken stir fry which was also really good. It came with bell peppers and scallions in it. I still liked my pho the best.
I would definitely recommend coming here if you are a fan of thai or vietnamese food. It was very good. The ambiance and service weren't anything to write home about, but the food made up for it! I honestly haven't been to a thai or vietnamese place, or chinese for that matter, that has really great service so I didn't expect much.
I came to check out one-eyed betty's the other day, to see what they had done with the old cantina diablos. I was not a fan of diablos, so I was very happy to hear that a restaurant with a beer focus would be replacing it.
The beer list is awesome. Just about anything you would ever want. It is two full pages long, so I'm sure you will find something you like. As far as the food, I would say it was pretty good. I am giving a 3 star review now, just because things weren't quite good enough for a 4 star. I would give 3.5 if I could. I am going to go back in a little while and see if things have improved, and I will improve my rating if they do.
I really like how they changed the decor, and opened up the space. The picnic table set up is cool. Our server (Steve, I believe) was very friendly. I ordered the pork belly sandwich, naturally since that is one of my favorite things. I can say it was OK, not great, but OK. It tasted a lot more like pork shoulder than pork belly...it was missing the rich fattiness that pork belly usually has. It was slightly salty as well, but the fries were good. What I really liked was the pretzel appetizer. It comes with 3 dipping sauces, but the garlic butter is the best (whole grain mustard and cheese sauce were the other two). I also really enjoyed the homemade doughnuts for desert. They come with 2 sauces: berry and chocolate. Neither of which are necessary because the doughnuts are so sweet on their own. I love it because they come out super hot! One problem I had with the service was that all of our plates came out at different times, like way different. One of my friends waited almost 10 minutes after we all got our food for hers. I don't like it when restaurants do that...we all want to eat together, that is the point!
Anyway, I know some of these problems should be fixed as they work everything out in the coming months. I will definitely be back to check it out again. Don't take this as a bad review, just as there is room for improvement! Its always nice to have new places to eat and drink in Ferndale!
