There are always a number of Mexican restaurants you can go to in any given city, but if you want to avoid the tourists in PS and the over-priced sloppy chimichangas, La Gran Fiesta is a great hole-in-the-wall.
I have been a fan for years and am always amazed that it never changes. Year after year Tony and Olivia (the owners) are there to greet me & serve me the best homestyle Mexican food I've ever had. Yeah, the carpets a little worn and the tables and chairs are a little old - but they've got character...and flavor. The place just feels right.
I will go 'on record' to say that Tony makes the BEST ceviche in all of California. I know this because I am a ceviche connoisseur; I've eaten $40 a cup ceviche in the finest restaurants and $3 ceviche off a truck in TJ...but the best is Tony's. I have often tried to pry the recipe from him, but he won't give it up.
If you make it there, see Tony and ask him to make you my favorite drink. It's called a Michelada (I like to think he named it after me because of the quantity of them that I drink). His michelada is served in a tall, cold glass and is a combo of Mexican beer, tomato juice, tabasco and lime with a salted rim. There is nothing better when it's 105 degrees out!
I am a freak for Pinkberry!
I am on this yogurt kick lately and am silly for it!! Whenever/wherever I see a yogurt shop I have to pull over and get a cup. There are a few cool mom & pop's that I've come across, but the quality of the Pinkberry yogurt is the best. From the service, to the look of the store & marketing, and even the presentation - it's simple and to the point; it's been the best so far. (Although, I'm not really down with the Hello Kitty feel).
The other day at my local shop the girl behind the counter said she hadn't seen me in a while (which is true - I hadn't been to that location in a couple of months), and it blew me away - I didn't realize that I'd been going there that often! It's like an addiction.
Anyway, today I drove by this MEGA pinkberry store in Redondo Beach and almost had a coronary...it's a good thing I was late for an appointment or I woulda put on a few pounds I don't need.
I think Korakia is the next best thing to being in Greece! I love it here and am torn between keeping it a secret and letting everyone in on my favorite home away from home.
From a design standpoint it's got the rustic ambiance of a foriegn resort...but it's also got an L.A. vibe. The layout (which was inherited) works well and you don't feel like you're crowded.
It's quaint, relaxing and the best part is that you don't need to socialize if all you want is recharge (I like the Orchard Room for it's privacy).
The scenery is beautiful; between the Bougainvillea, palm trees, mountains and water, you'll feel like you're in a Morroccan villa.
The staff girls are "hot" in their white smocks and Paulette is a gracious hostess...
This place rocks....just don't tell anybody.
I love this place!
I am all about the gourmet burger right now (watch for my upcoming reviews on a my other new find)....this place makes a very good custom burger, but what makes it an experience is how you order it. I love the ease and simplicity of it...and the uniqueness.
It really is a 'hole in the wall' and those are always the best places.
I'll eat there everytime I'm on the westside.
