Souen has been on my list of places to try for a while now, and I wish I'd gotten around to coming here sooner! I knew they have plenty of vegan AND gluten-free menu options and, being the sucker for any kind of curry that I am, I chose the Vegetable Curry (which came with brown rice), and our server seemed knowledgeable about what items on the menu are vegan and gluten-free. It was a mild curry and had turmeric and ginger to add a unique flavor to it, which was delicious. I imagine the vegetables in it vary depending on the season, but mine had kale, some kind of winter squash,
It is helpful that the menu identifies which foods are NOT gluten-free (seitan, soba, udon, baked tofu, and any of the fried items) and our server was super helpful in adding that the fried items are also not vegan because they are fried in the same oil as the seafood items.
I also got the home-made cornbread, which came with apple butter. I'm not a fan of apple butter in general, so I didn't use it. The cornbread itself wasn't my favorite. It was a little bland, and initially I couldn't tell if it was supposed to be a sweeter type of cornbread or a savory type of cornbread. I probably won't get it again next time I come here.
Also, my friend ordered one of the sushi rolls that comes with the choice of either miso soup or the bean soup, and she asked our server which one he recommended. He recommended both, and that she could get half of one and half of the other. Now, you would think she would have gotten a small half-portion bowl with one and another with the other. But no ... she got both soups in one normal-sized bowl. Sort of mixed together, though, you could tell they tried to keep the soups on either side of the bowl. But in the same bowl. Not exactly what we had in mind!
